Organized by the Anyang Foundation for Culture & Arts, Anyang Public Art Project 6 (APAP 6) brings around 100 artworks by 47 international artists to spaces across the city, situated 20 kilometers from the Seoul metropolitan area. Helmed by artistic director Kim Yoon-sub, the 2019 edition, “Symbiotic City,” explores themes of urban renewal and sustainability.

At the Anyang Pavilion, the main exhibition, “Better Than Tomorrow,” features works by seven artists considering public art’s contributions to urban redevelopment. Additionally, projects are on display at multiple locations both within the festival’s main venue of the Anyang Art Park and elsewhere in the city. A highlight is Smog Free Tower (2015–) by Daan Roosegaarde, a Dutch artist and innovator who explores the relation between people, technology, and space through socially conscious designs. Roosegaarde’s monumental, sustainably powered air purifier will remain stationed at Pyeongchon Central Park until the end of the year. Other notable works include Georges Rousse’s red cube Anyang 2019 (2019), and Yoon Suk-nam’s 1025: With or Without Person (2008/19), a set of painted wooden sculptures of rescued dogs, both installed near the Anyang Museum. APAP 6 has also restaged late performance pioneer Lee Wen’s Ping-Pong Go-Round (1998/2019), a circular table designed for more than two players at a time.
