School of Creative Media Annual 2021: Diaspora exhibits artworks of a wide variety of mediums by our graduates, who undertook interdisciplinary art training. SCM Annual 2021 is a showcase of artworks from multiple disciplines ranging from animation, film and videography, installation and objects, to interactive and dynamic media as well as photography. Meanwhile, preview sections for cinematic works will be held at the theaters of the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre.

“Diaspora,” the theme of this year’s show, refers to dispersion and movement away from a particular location. The challenging circumstances of our modern world have created a diasporic spread across different areas, such as the fragmentation of societies, global information, and values. This changes the nature of persistence, and the way we understand it. Because of the diasporic spread on a technological level, information is eruptive and disseminated through the Internet, breaking regional boundaries and bringing people closer together as a result of globalization. Diasporization becomes inevitable.

Amid these developments, we are urged to empower ourselves by broadening our ways of seeing, so that we may present our understanding of a fragmented world through a multifaceted lens. Even if we excel in different fields, we still share the same roots and belong to the same place.

This year’s SCM Annual brings together thesis projects by the School of Creative Media’s classes of  2020 and 2021. It is a testament to the passion and tenacity of individuals who have powered through in spite of the pandemic, and created artworks that demonstrate a profound understanding of interdisciplinary practices. The artworks convey emotions and thoughts, and analyze our understanding of the world from the artists’ perspectives.

Ranging from personal reflections to societal commentary, the topics chosen by these graduates echo the thoughts and concerns of a generation undergoing radical adjustment. Though living in times of great divide, these young artists recognize the power of art. The different mediums used in this exhibition vary from piece to piece, utilizing the mechanisms of cinema to depict stories through thoughtfully crafted scripts, and animation to construct new worlds and stories from sketch to completion. Other installations are brought to life by artfully repurposed materials, or experiment with photography to capture and reframe the world as we know it. These works exude a collective vitality and robust social awareness, cementing the idea that connectedness and unity are what sustain us as people. In a bordered world, we have a duty to strengthen our sense of community and stand firm in the values we believe in.
