Düsseldorf- and New York-based Anna KE has been announced as Georgia’s representative artist at the 58th Venice Biennale.

KE will present an immersive installation REARMIRRORVIEW, Simulation is Simulation, is Simulation, is Simulation… (2019), which references the architectural forms of stages, tribunal platforms, communal fountains and other motifs found in public spaces. Interspersed within the structure will be sculptures and video works exploring the frictions between what is perceived to be socially normal and abnormal. Margot Norton, a curator at the New Museum in New York, will curate the show.

KE was trained as a classical ballet dancer. Her practice deals with control and social conventions, often communicated through the artist contorting her own body as she traverses through various spaces or attempting to complete absurd tasks. Her recent exhibitions, centered around what she sees as the sterile history of modernism, as well as technology and feminism, include: “Profound Approach and Easy Outcome” at New York’s Queens Museum (2017–18), “Teen Factory” at Simone Subal, New York (2015) and “Two Whores in the Same Dress” at Galerie Barbara Thumm, Berlin (2013).

Georgia’s national pavilion is commissioned by online gallery Project ArtBeat and will be on view from May 11 to November 24, 2019.
