On April 8, Art Basel Hong Kong (ABHK) revealed the gallery lineup for its ninth edition, slated for May 21 to 23 at its usual venue, the Hong Kong Convention Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). This year’s in-person event boasts 104 galleries from 23 countries and territories, and is the Swiss art fair’s first large-scale event since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The main sector will present 86 galleries, with a strong focus on experimental works. First-timer exhibitors in this section include Proyectos Monclova (Mexico City), which will showcase the latest works from painter and sculptor Gabriel de la Mora’s Neornithes series, as well as New York’s Karma gallery, and Hong Kong’s Empty Gallery and Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery. For the Insights sector, ten galleries will highlight artists from the Asia Pacific region including, among others, artist and calligrapher Morita Shiryu at Shibunkaku (Kyoto); textile artist Kimsooja at Axel Vervoordt (Antwerp / HongKong); and photographer Heeseung Chung at Gallery Baton (Seoul). Meanwhile, eight galleries in the Discoveries section will each introduce one emerging artist.

Among those unable to attend in person due to travel restrictions, 56 galleries will be presented as a satellite booth, which will be managed by local representatives appointed by ABHK. Some galleries will host booths in collaboration with those with a physical presence in the city, such as the partnership of Silverlens (Manila) and Rossi & Rossi (Hong Kong / London), while others are presenting collaborative booths such as Meyer Riegger (Karlsruhe) and Sies + Höke (Düsseldorf), and Antenna Space (Shanghai) and Balice Hertling (Paris).

The fair will also launch a new digital platform, titled Art Basel Live: Hong Kong, which will include an Online Viewing Room (OVR), various programs, and livestreamed tours of the fair and other cultural events around the city.

Fourteen months ago ABHK was canceled weeks before its scheduled March 2020 fair, with the first of its OVRs held instead. The 2020 Basel and Miami editions were similarly moved online. The Hong Kong fair held a joint venture with art fair Fine Art Asia in November 2020, titled Hong Kong Spotlight, featuring 22 galleries from previous editions of ABHK.
