How do we narrate histories? For Thai artist Arin Rungjang, who was born in Bangkok in 1975—a period of protracted turmoil, resulting in military rule being imposed after a coup in 1976—the accessing and examination of collective and personal memory is the driving force of his practice. In this interview, ArtAsiaPacific discusses his most recent works, including a multimedia work threading together the history of Bangkok’s famous Democracy Monument, the final destination of a 400,000-person march against the military junta in 1973. First shown at documenta 14, the film was recently screened in Hong Kong as part of an artist’s residency organized by Asia Seed, where he developed a workshop for youths and young artists with Pak Sheung Chuen.
