Interview with Chris Doyle

Video May 2011

Sydney-born, Hong Kong-based Chris Doyle is the award-winning cinematographer behind dozens of critically acclaimed films, including the sublime visuals of Wong Kar-wai’s Chungking Express (1995), In the Mood for Love (2000) and 2046 (2004). His most recent film, Shinji Imaoka’s Underwater Love (2011), was one of the highlights of this year’s Cannes International Film Festival.

ArtAsiaPacific met with Doyle in Alan’s Alley Video store, where he told us about the artists-turned-filmmakers he admires, the excess of theatricality in the contemporary film industry and the pleasure of engaging in visual ideas—the joy of doing away with words.
