Auckland-based Billy Apple—the artist and the brand—has been challenging conventional approaches to art-making for the last six decades. Apple is known for blurring the boundaries between art and disciplines such as biotechnology and horticulture. ArtAsiaPacific recently sat down with the artist on the occasion of his solo show, “Billy Apple© Six Decades 1962–2018,” at Hong Kong’s Rossi & Rossi gallery to discuss his artistic trajectory, beginning with his early Pop period in London and New York to his cellular reproduction project, which has immortalized the artist.
