Vietnamese-American multidisciplinary artist Tuan Andrew Nguyen is known for his highly eclectic oeuvre, from a tongue-in-cheek “rebranding campaign” for communism as part of Ho Chi Minh City-based collective The Propeller Group, to gorgeously cinematic short films tackling such weighty issues as nationhood, displacement and, now, animal endangerment. On the occasion of his solo show, “My Ailing Beliefs Can Cure Your Wretched Desires,” at Hong Kong’s 10 Chancery Lane Gallery, ArtAsiaPacific sat down with the artist to discuss this body of work, the different Vietnamese traditions and craft techniques that inspired him, and the need to think critically about culture.
